| The London Marathon has its cannon to start the race, this scenic tour of some of the Irwell Sculpture Trail in south-east Lancashire got underway courtesy of a Roundhead soldier and his musket from the Civil War! The 5 kilometres takes in a mixture of tarmac, cobbles, muddy paths, riverside meadows, duckboard and a disused railway line though the highlights are the two impressive sculptures that the race passes by, or in the case of the massive “In The Frame “ through. The race was won by local triathlete GARRIE PROSSER holding off the challenge of Rossendale’s THORNTON TAYLOR. Stockport’s FRANK REILLY, in the over-55 category showed a clean pair of heels to most of the field in third place overall. NICOLA WOOD of Accrington took the honours in the ladies race ahead of Taylor’s clubmate JULIE HOLDEN. The prizes were presented by the godfather of British distance running: RON HILL who enjoyed the race on his 14,003rd consecutive day of running; he reckoned the route is a good 5 and a half kilometres and the organisers are happy to bow to his experience!
